Taking the inimitable style of carefully curated programming that has long since become its calling card, Red Bull Music Academy is hitting the road this spring. The Red Bull Music Academy UK Tour will roll through Glasgow, Bristol, London and Manchester for a month-long programme of club nights, shows, lectures, workshops, daytime parties, live radio broadcasts and special events from some of music’s most eminent emissaries.

A hedonistic hybrid that takes the Academy’s signature style and mixes it with the breadth of a city festival, the UK Tour takes over a different locale each week for a unique plethora of events that draws on each city’s cultural heritage.

The programme is peppered with collaborations between local heroes, institutions and labels, saluting the homegrown talent that forms the bedrock of these rich musical communities, alongside a roster of world-class heavyweights. From lectures with A$AP Rocky, Seth Troxler and Danny Brown, to experimental sensory adventures from Numbers, Goat and DJ Koze; a Wolf + Lamb all-dayer, Chapter 10’s take on a traditional tea dance headlined by Joe Claussell; Rebel Sound bringing out the big guns with Congo Natty and Earl Gateshead, to a workshop with production wizard Julio Bashmore, the UK Tour is a sweeping showcase of today’s emerging and established icons.

GLASGOW: MARCH 26TH – 29TH

Landing first in Glasgow from 26th – 29th March…the Red Bull Music Academy UK Tour calls upon local ambassadors of bass Optimo for Optimo Pequeno Espacio, a one-off, two-hour special for 30 lucky souls who nab one of the tickets to this tiny party with a big heart. A Subculture special brings out Detroit legend Derrick May alongside the enigmatic Paranoid London and Sub Club residents Harri & Domenic, while elsewhere former Academy alumni Koreless makes an appearance at Sui Generis: Artists On To Their Own with Mo Kolours, Pional, Romare, Ol and Uraki Riddim; homegrown label LuckyMe takes the reigns at The Glue Factory for a night featuring interdisciplinary artiste Mykki Blanco; and rap’s eloquent reprobate Danny Brown chats about how Detroit inspired his music before he takes the stage with Jon Phonics, Mumdance and DJ Milktray for an Astral Black special. Cosmic selectors Dimitri from Paris and Prins Thomas head up From Disco to Disco while the Numbers crew present their own one-off immersive, experimental art and music show, exploring dream-like visualisations of the natural world in Loops with Numbers. Taking over Sub Club’s temporary cultural destination for the curious and creative, The Sub Hub, RBMA Radio: Live in Glasgow celebrates local legends and independent artists during a live broadcast featuring interviews, performances and mixes from the likes of Nightwave, Rebecca Vasmont, Inkke, Harri & Domenic, and Optimo.

Four City Marathon Of Club Nights, Shows, Lectures, Workshops, Day Parties, Live Radio Broadcasts & Special Events

BRISTOL: APRIL 2ND – 6TH

Bristol follows on Easter Weekend (2nd – 6th April)…kicking off proceedings with a Seth Troxler three-part affair that finds him in conversation with Resident Advisor’s Nick Sabine, dishing up culinary treats and putting his infamous selector skills to good use. An RBMA Radio studio sets up home in Idle Hands Record Store for RBMA Radio: Live in Bristol, featuring local crew Krust, Applebim, Chris Farrell, Troy Gunner, Hodge and Shanti Celeste, before a 17th century manor house on Kings Weston estate transforms into a one-of-a-kind house party featuring Danny Brown, 2014 Academy alum Mumdance, Novelist and his crew The Square. Moving into esoteric territory, experimental alt-fusion troupe Goat throw a masked ball, inviting everyone to lock away their possessions and mask-up before entering Sounds of Surrender, while local party-starters Just Jack invite DJ Koze to explore his beliefs on the Amygdala, the titular inspiration behind his second album, soundtracked by ItaloJohnson and Just Jack residents Tom Rio, Dan Wild and Robin Sure. Eclectic impresarios Lonnie Liston Smith and Gilles Peterson command the Bristol Planetarium to mark the 40th anniversary of Smith’s seminal cosmic jazz album ‘Expansions’, settling down for a conversation before a collaborative live show.

LONDON: APRIL 8TH – 12TH

Third on the cross-country carousel, the London leg takes place 8th – 12th April…and features a lecture with Harlem’s vanguard MC A$AP Rocky chatting with Academy team member Benji B, The Future Sounds of Hip Hop showcasing emerging talent Little Simz alongside BBC 1Xtra’s Semtex, Jay Prince and rap royalty Pusha T; and homegrown gods of grime and UK garage throwing a Tropical Roller Disco featuring JME, Skepta, Preditah, C4, Plastician, Logan Sama, Flowdan and Slimzee. Rebel Sound: Three Generations of Soundboy welcomes 2014 Red Bull Culture Clash champions Rebel Sound – aka the champ soundsystem squad of Chase & Status + Rage, David Rodigan and Shy FX – for their first headline show since their creation in 2014, celebrating cross-generational inspirations with Congo Natty, Jus Now ft. Serocee, and Earl Gateshead; while Broadwalk Records head honcho and bass alchemist Julio Bashmore hosts a workshop. RBMA Radio taps into the rich heritage of London’s airwaves in RBMA Radio High Frequencies: Live in London, inviting some of the capital’s most iconic pirate radio stations to take over the ArcelorMittal Orbit for a live broadcast; while secret throwdown 0800 – R1NG 2 R4V3 pays tribute to the bygone era of illegal raves synonymous with pirate radio culture – keeping everything hush-hush until the day, the line-up and location will be revealed in true old-school form. Echoing this homage to the capital’s cult rave history, Brooklyn’s disco house evangelists Wolf + Lamb throw a 7-hour rager at The Old Queen’s Head, while T Dance merges aspects of a traditional tea dance with four decades of alternative dancefloor culture at an all-out buffet of house, disco and techno; and Dark & Lovely Global Roots sees two behemoths at the forefront of underground culture, Boiler Room’s Thris Tian and Blackfoot Phoenix, come together to explore new music from around the world, featuring an eclectic mix of global beats.

MANCHESTER: APRIL 16TH – 19TH

Manchester brings the UK Tour to a close from 16th – 19th April…with Industrial City Sounds taking over clubbing institution Sankeys for a night of techno excellence featuring Derrick May, Surgeon, Happa, Acre, Dana Ruh and Tin Man, spectral beatsmiths Mount Kimbie headline an intimate Soup Kitchen show; bass boss Zed Bias takes the stage with a cohort of local heroes including ∆KKORD, Academy alum Illum Sphere, Levelz, Chimpo, and more; and PRhyme (aka Royce Da 5’9″ and DJ Premier) host a workshop before playing Wax Works with dancefloor apostles Jazzy Jeff and Todd Terry, Academy grad Krystal Klear, and Rinse FM’s Josey Rebelle. Local duo DR.ME showcase some of their iconic record sleeve artwork in DR.ME’s Jacket; RBMA Radio pop up with the final of their pop-up broadcasts, RBMA Radio: Live in Manchester, featuring new wave talent Metrodome, Paleman, Danuka, Swing Ting, Meet Free DJs and Growing Palms alongside Krystal Klear, Zed Bias, Jon K, Jonny Dub and Chunky; Academy alum Doc Daneeka and Omar-S headline Deep South, and the grime crew return with a lecture from Skepta and a blowout Tropical bash at historic venue The Ritz.
